Lots of laughs and gaffes at Chum's comedy night
Dan Hirshon '04 went to Student Events and told them that he wanted to have a comedy night. They told him that if he got everyone together they would take care of the funding and the publicity. He rose to the occasion and put together a great night of laughter and fun. Comedy Night at Cholmondley's was all the laughs it promised it to be. Featuring five comedians and one comedic host, it was a truly enjoyable experience. The evening began with Hirshon opening the show with some jokes of his own. He was very funny and got a lot of laughs from the audience. He also got up on the stage between acts to introduce each comedian and acted as the host. His jokes were funnier than some of the main performers and he did a good job making the audience laugh.
The first comedian was Mike Kaplan, a Brandeis alumnus. Mike told some funny jokes but he had a hard time ending them. They often finished awkwardly, ruining them. While his ideas were funny and he was still mostly entertaining, he could do with some polishing up, especially at the finish to alleviate the awkwardness for him and the audience.
The next comedian was Tim Kaelin who was, by far, the worst comedian of the night. His jokes were sometimes too vulgar to be funny. While comedians are often vulgar, his vulgarity was over-the-top and more offensive than funny. He also had a very hard time relating to the audience. He often either lost his train of thought or did not know what he wanted to say next because after almost every joke he said, "So what else is going on?" and then paused to think for a minute.
This added to the discomfort in the room because not only had he just finished telling a bad joke but he couldn't think of something to alleviate it. He was introduced as a comedian beginning to make a name for himself in New England, but he still has a lot of work to do. He might be better for an older audience, but to college students he was not funny and did not relate to them.
After Kaelin was Kenny Z from WFNX. He was a relief after Kaelin and once again the laughter returned to Chum's. He told some great jokes, a lot of them sexual in nature, but not uncommon for a comedian. He had a good on-stage persona, and unlike his predecessor he knew how to relate to the crowd and get them to laugh.
Following Kenny Z was Greg Johnson, a recent graduate of Boston
College. He too was very funny. He often poked fun at himself and the fact that he was living at home again and didn't have a job. He also related directly to the audience by telling jokes about college and his family. Johnson also sometimes picked on the two girls behind the counter working at Chum's that night. He often referred to them as "the coffee girls" and made it his mission of the evening to get them to smile. If he couldn't get "the coffee girls" to smile, it wasn't because of his shortcomings, because he definitely succeeded in getting the rest of the room not just to smile but to laugh.
The final performer was headliner Jim McCue, a comedian who has appeared on Comedy Central. Unlike most of the other comedians, he was older than the majority of his audience, but he still knew how to relate to them and make them laugh. He started off by telling jokes about life, but soon his jokes turned into picking on people in the audience. Like a good comedian does, he sometimes referred back to jokes he had already made earlier in the evening. Overall, he was very funny and entertaining.
Comedy Night as a whole was a great success for Hirshon and Student Events. For the most part, Hirshon did a great job of putting together a funny lineup. The reaction of the crowd also showed that everyone was having a good time and there was a great turnout. Everyone there had an entertaining night of laughs.
