In October of 1986, the New York Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox in Game 7 of the World Series, bringing the club its second championship in history. To Mets fans, the 29 years that have followed likely feel like centuries. The team has not won a Major League Baseball championship since then, stuck in a decades-long drought that has featured mid-season collapses, disappointing play on the field and heartbreak in 2000 when the Mets fell to the rival New York Yankees in the “Subway Series.” Though some Mets fans may have grown accustomed to heartbreak and mediocrity, it appears they once again have a reason for hope.
This past Saturday, former pitcher Nelson Figueroa ’98 was inducted as part of the 2015 class of the Joseph M. Linsey Brandeis Athletics Hall of Fame, which also elected contributor Israel “Ace” Weinstein, women’s tennis player Brenda Schafer ’77 and the 1957 to 1958 men’s basketball team. Figueroa is the first and only Brandeis alum to reach the ultimate pedestal in professional baseball: Major League Baseball. Before the ceremony on Saturday, the Justice was able to sit down with Figueroa to talk about a career which took him from a park in Waltham to the bright lights of Citi Field.
It took 95 minutes, but Alec Spivack ’16 scored a howler off of a free kick to propel the Brandeis Judges (12-2-1, 2-2 UAA) to a 1-0 win in extra time on Sunday against the No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis Bears (12-2, 3-1 UAA). Spivack’s goal came at a crucial time, as the Judges had dropped a game to the unranked University of Chicago earlier in the weekend, but this win was important in keeping pace both in the UAA and in the national rankings.
The women’s tennis team completed its fall season at the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Doubles Tennis Tournament last weekend, where two pairs of doubles rattled off perfect weekends.
The No. 7 men’s soccer team split Homecoming weekend on Gordon Field against University Athletic Association foes as the Judges continued to struggle to maintain their offensive output. On Sunday, the Judges lost 2-0 at home to Washington University in St. Louis, while on Friday they defeated the University of Chicago 1-0 in overtime.
The volleyball team went 0-4 this past weekend at their second University Athletic Association round robin of the season. The Judges, playing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, lost to New York University 1-3 in their second game on Sunday, after losing to the University of Chicago 0-3 earlier in the day. On Saturday, the team lost 0-3 to both Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Rochester. With the losses, the Judges fall to 3-20 overall and 0-7 in UAA play.
The men and women’s swim teams were unable to make a splash this weekend at their meet against Wheaton College. In the first scored event of the year, the Brandeis teams looked sluggish and were unable to come away with a win. The women’s team lost by 122 points, falling 206 to 84, while the men’s squad did not make much of an improvement, losing 177.5 to 107.5.
The men and women’s cross country team posted solid finishes this past Saturday at the Connecticut College Cross Country Invitational, as the men finished in eighth out of 26 teams while the women finished in sixth out of 25.
The women’s soccer team posted a 2-0 record this week, defeating Case Western Reserve University 2-0 on Sunday and Eastern Nazerene 2-0 last Tuesday.
It was a week of frustration and elation for the No. 6 men’s soccer team, as disappointment came in the form of a 0-0 draw against rival Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Tuesday.
On Saturday the men and women’s cross country teams turned in strong showings at the Open New England Championships in Franklin Park, located in downtown Boston, competing against runners from across all three NCAA Divisions.
The men’s tennis team started the weekend at Bates College in the Wallach Invitational. Going into this tournament, they looked to revive their lackluster season and make a serious run into the later rounds.
It was a tough week for the women’s volleyball team as they visited Medford, Mass. for a trimatch with Tufts University and Colby College. The squad fell to Colby before being shutout by the Jumbos.
The National Hockey League season opened on Wednesday as the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks took on the New York Rangers and lifted their championship banner. The Blackhawks ended up losing in a tight game but came to the Barclays Center as the New York Islanders opened their new venue.
The women’s soccer team went 2-0 this past week to extend their winning streak to seven games to begin the season.
Last Wednesday, the No. 25 men’s soccer outlasted Worcester Polytechnic Institute in double overtime to earn a 1-0 win, pushing their record to 6-1 on the season.
The men and women’s cross country teams have shone once again, finishing with the two first place medals at the University of Massachusetts Invitational this weekend. Both the men’s and women’s teams edged out East Stroudsburg University to win their field of 43 and 42 teams respectively.
The men’s tennis team opened its Fall season last weekend at the Middlebury College Invitational with strong play in both singles and doubles action, sending three players to the tournament’s second day. Brian Granoff ’17 led the charge for the Judges, defeating the tournament’s top seed, Middlebury senior Ari Smolyar, in the semifinals en route to Brandeis’ only finals appearance of the tournament on the weekend.
It was an up-and-down week for the women’s volleyball team. The squad split two games on Saturday and dropped its match Thursday against Emerson College, the weekend victory providing a silver lining in what has thus far been a trying season.
