Lawrence plans move to Waltham this summer

Brandeis University President Frederick Lawrence and his wife, Kathy, will be living within a mile of campus beginning this summer. The Lawrences plan to move from their current Cambridge lodgings to an apartment in the newly renovated Watch Factory on Crescent Street in Waltham.


Students occupy SCC for a day

Six candidates vie for presidency in Union debate

The six Student Union presidential candidates and two vice presidential candidates participated in a debate cosponsored by the Justice, the Hoot, the Student Union and the Brandeis Academic Debate and Speech Society last night in Olin-Sang.. Polls will open for the first round of voting today at noon. Presidential candidates Louis Connelly '13, David Fisch '13, Dillon Harvey '14, Joshua Hoffman-Senn '13, Todd Kirkland '13 and Steven Milo '13 responded to questions from the moderators, the editors in chief of the Justice and the Hoot, as well as from student audience members.


Student arrested at SJP protests of Israeli Knesset

Newton police arrested one Brandeis student and dispersed approximately 15 protesters in total at last Monday's panel of members of the Knesset, Israel's Parliament, during a town hall-style meeting at Temple Emanuel in Newton, Mass. Knesset members Ofir Akunis, Lia Shemtov, Ilan Gilon, Raleb Majadele and Fania Kirshenbaum, all Ruderman Fellows, spoke at the meeting as part of the Ruderman Fellows Program, which partnered with the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies to bring Knesset members to the Boston area to learn about the American Jewish community. During the forum, members of Brandeis Students for Justice in Palestine, all wearing blue T-shirts emblazoned with the word "apartheid" in Hebrew, stood up and yelled "mic check," when Akunis began to speak. A few students from other Boston-area universities and local activists were also in attendance, according to SJP member Seth Grande '12, along with members of the peace activist group CODEPINK, according to Newton police reports. Protesters continued to chant slogans such as "Israel is an apartheid state and the Knesset is an apartheid parliament," "Mr. Akunis and Ms. Kirshenbaum, how do you feel to be silenced?" and "free, free Palestine," for approximately one minute until they were led out of the room by police. Crystal Shuttle fire alarms passengers

A Crystal Shuttle bus briefly caught on fire for unknown reasons as it was returning to campus from Cambridge last Friday night, according to University Police reports and accounts of student passengers.


Israeli foreign policy expert discusses the Middle East

Ehud Eiran Ph.D. '10, Israeli foreign policy expert and Post-doctoral Fellow in International Relations at Haifa University, spoke and hosted a discussion on the challenge of relations between Israel and Lebanon on Thursday afternoon at the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies. The event was cosponsored by the Schusterman Center and Brandeis' Department of Politics as the latest installment in Schusterman's Spring Speaker Series. Eiran's presentation, titled "Our Test Grows Out of Their Weakness: Israel and the Security Challenge of the Feeble Lebanese State 1968-2000," examined the security threat of weak states, focusing on Israel's past relations with, and policy toward, the unstable neighboring country of Lebanon. He also framed the discussion in the context of the recent "Arab Spring," which gave rise to many new weak governments in the region. Within the time frame of his topic, Lebanon was the only unstable country in the region, but now many others also pose a threat to Israel.


Suhaib Webb gives keynote at Islam Week

Suhaib Webb, imam at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center in Roxbury and "one of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the world," according to the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center, delivered the keynote address at Islam Awareness Week Thursday night in Rapaporte Treasure Hall in Goldfarb Library.


Univ tackles housing concerns

Housing lottery numbers for the 2012-2013 academic year were issued two weeks ago, and the lack of sufficient space has become an immediate concern for many students, especially upperclassmen, who are currently not guaranteed housing.
