IBS in talks with former Playboy Enterprises CEO Christie Hefner

The International Business School is in an ongoing discussion with former Chairwoman and Chief Executing Officer of Playboy Enterprises Christie Hefner '74 about how she can become affiliated with the International Business School, according to IBS Senior Associate Director of Communications Matthew Parillo.Hefner became the chairman and CEO of Playboy Enterprises in 1988 before stepping down this January.


University Curriculum Committee motions for an optional third semester

New developments on recent academic restructuring proposals include a discussion of the financial aspects of pursuing a Justice Brandeis Semester over the summer and the University Curriculum Committee's motion for the creation of a voluntary Justice Brandeis Semester in the summer of 2010.The UCC also motioned to create a new Business Major, a new Media, Communications and Society major and change the residency requirement from seven to eight semesters in the beginning of fall 2010.


Brandeis hires PR firm to handle Rose media attention

Brandeis has hired the public relations firm Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications, Inc. in light of the increased press inquiries regarding the Rose Art Museum, University President Jehuda Reinharz explained at a press conference held last week for campus media.The University has a contract with Rasky Baerlein for two months "for which they will bill us $20,000," Reinharz wrote in an e-mail to the faculty listserv.

Art world expresses anger at decision to close museum

Rose Art Museum donors, museum staff and the museum's Board of Overseers have expressed disappointment with the University's decision to close the Rose after last week's unanimous vote cast by the Board of Trustees.Chair of the Rose Board of Overseers Jonathan Lee explained that although the Board is concerned with the museum's finances, the University has "ultimate responsibility for the finances."In a statement posted on the museum's Web site, Director of the Rose Art Museum Michael Rush emphasized, "neither the Rose staff nor the Rose Board of Overseers had any knowledge of this decision.


Univ plans to increase enrollment

The admissions office plans to enroll 825 students next year, as opposed to the 750 it aimed to enroll last year, according to Dean of Admissions Gil Villanueva.Commenting on the University's recent proposal to increase the student body by 12 percent in order to raise revenue, Dean of Financial Services Peter Giumette said, "Like many schools that are moderately endowed, much of our operating budget comes from revenue and the major portion of our revenue comes from tuition payment." Villanueva explained that another reason for admitting more students is that "many of our students are actually more and more studying abroad, and also so many are so strong that they are graduating at a faster rate."The numbers of regular and early decision applicants, as well as the targeted figure for midyear applicants, are lower for 2009, according to Villanueva.Villanueva revealed that 6,451 regular- decision applicants have applied as of last Friday, which "is lower than last year's number by roughly 12.2 percent."Villanueva said the numbers of first- round early- decision and second- round early-decision applicants for 2009 are 280 and 159, respectively.


Hillel to reduce program funding

The Brandeis chapter of Hillel, part of Hillel International, will be forced to cut back allocations to student programs and will be unable to hire a full-time Jewish Chaplain for the time being as a result of declining revenues due to the financial crisis, according to Brandeis Hillel Executive Director Larry Sternberg.Hillel is dedicated to enhancing Jewish life at colleges and universities.Vice President for Communications of National Hillel Jeff Rubin '81 said that Hillel International has suffered a loss of $620,000 due to investing in Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme.


VP Hughes resigns, Cohen joins Executive Board

The Student Union Executive Board confirmed five personnel changes for the spring semester, including the resignation of Vice President Adam Hughes '11; the appointment of Laura Cohen '09, currently the director of the Office of Student Rights and Advocacy, to the Executive Board; and the resignation of Ryan McElhaney '10 from the post of the director of community development at a Senate meeting that took place last Sunday.Andrew Brooks '09, who was elected as the new executive senator last semester, will now be the acting vice president as per the Senate constitution, according to Hughes.
