Omar Barghouti speaks about Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement

On April 13, Brandeis Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace sponsored Omar Barghouti, an independent Palestinian commentator and human rights activist, to speak about the history and the reasoning behind his support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign, which draws strong ties between modern-day Israel and apartheid-era South Africa.


Senators elected in second round of voting

UPDATEDNine students were elected as Student Union representatives in yesterday's elections, while one senator for the Class of 2012, two senators for the class of 2013, the racial minority senator and Brandeis Sustainability Fund Board representative positions, as well as additional seats on the Student Judiciary, will remain unfilled until next semester, according to an e-mail from Student Union Secretary Todd Kirkland '13.Missy Skolnik was elected as the senator for the Class of 2012, winning 99 out of the 119 votes cast.Rosby Kome-Mensah and Ricky Rosen were elected as Senators for the Class of 2014, winning 57 and 46 votes out of 179, respectively.In an interview with the Justice, Kome-Mensah said, "I am so happy that the Class of 2014 has elected me to represent them next academic year in the Student Union, and I hope to make them proud by executing my duties to the best of my ability." Rosen, in an interview with the Justice, said that one of his goals is to strengthen communications between students and the University.17.47 percent of students voted in the Senator at Large election, which Shekeyla Caldwell '14 won with 416 of 591 votes.


Search committee for director of Library and Technology Services formed

Provost Marty Krauss announced the formation of a search committee for the next director of Library and Technology Services in an April 13 campuswide e-mail.According to the Co-chair of the committee and Vice President for Planning and Institutional Research Dan Feldman, even though Krauss' e-mail specified the position as being the director of Library and Technology Services, the open position is for vice president and vice provost for Libraries and Information Technology, the same position Perry Hanson currently holds.The formation of this committee follows Hanson's announcement of his retirement last fall, according to a Feb.

Student Union Secretary Herbie Rosen '12 was elected to serve as the Student Union president for the 2011 to 2012 academic year after running against Student Union Treasurer Akash Vadalia '12 and Amber Kornreich '12.

Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace present three generations of Palestinian refugees

Last night, three Palestinians living in the United States presented their experiences as three generations of refugees in the States to a small group of students as part of Nakba Commemoration Day 2011, a three-day event.The event was co-sponsored by Brandeis Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace.The presenters, Dr. Khaid Khalili, Layla Cable and Lisa Hanania '11, spoke about what they considered to be the Palestinian disaster, or Nakba (in Arabic) of 1948, when the modern-day state of Israel was declared.


Fuhrer addresses US recovery

Last Wednesday, members of the Brandeis Economics Club as well as the Hiatt Career Center, the Business program and the Economics department brought Executive Vice President and Senior Policy Adviser of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston Jeffrey Fuhrer to discuss the role of the Fed during recovery from a recession and the current action being taken by the Fed to achieve that goal.The presentation, titled "The Role of the Federal Reserve in Economic Recovery," focused on the challenges of recovering from a recession, what the current economic environment is like and what the Fed is doing to aid in this recovery process.Fuhrer's lecture pointed to persistent numbers of high unemployment, undesirable low inflation and a "moribund" residential sector as reasons for a slow recession recovery.


Students plan to run in upcoming Student Union elections

Tomorrow, students will finalize their plans to campaign for positions on the Student Union Executive Board in the elections that will take place on April 14.The available positions on the Student Union E-Board are president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, Finance Board members, junior representative to the Board of Trustees, junior representative to the Alumni Association and junior representative to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.According to Union Secretary Herbie Rosen '12, at press time approximately 15 students had unofficially informed him that they plan to campaign for positions on the Union E-Board.
