Music grad memo blocked from Trustees

University President Jehuda Reinharz's office denied graduate students in the music department their request to distribute a memorandum to the University Board of Trustees last month regarding Dean of Arts and Sciences Adam Jaffe's proposal to eliminate the music composition and theory Ph.D.


Humanities Council letter scrutinizes Jaffe's plans

The Humanities Council wrote a letter of recommendation to the administration during the break about Dean of Arts and Sciences Adam Jaffe's strategic planning analyses and proposals, saying that some of his ideas would be beneficial while others "extremely harmful" to the university.In the letter, the council writes that it is "delighted that the dean is undertaking a systematic review of the arts and sciences as part of the University's integrated plan." The council also states that they are supportive of leaves for junior and contract faculty and appreciative of efforts for more competitive stipends for graduate students.But the letter expresses apprehension that Jaffe's proposals may harm the core of a liberal arts education.The council acts as the oversight body for the humanities at Brandeis, approving courses in the humanities by considering syllabi and the purposes of instruction.


Provost creates review committee for Jaffe report

Provost Marty Krauss and the faculty senate impaneled the Faculty Review Committee on Nov. 29 to review Dean of Arts and Sciences Adam Jaffe's curriculum proposals and to organize feedback and analyses into an advisory report.That report is expected to be submitted by Feb.


New scholarship will honor student contributions to University

The Student Union and the administration recently launched the Brandeis Achievement Award, an annual scholarship of $5,000 per semester to recognize 10 current students whose activities outside of the classroom improve the community.The initiative was spearheaded by Union Vice President Erica Lemansky '05, who said she spent last year and last summer working with administrators on creating the award.
