The sounds of Brandeis: fall music preview

While rapper Talib Kweli may be the most recognizable act to perform at Brandeis this fall, music organizers and performers are preparing for what promises to be a busy season for music makers and music lovers alike.


Manginah welcomes back alumni

"Live, from Brandeis, it's Sunday Afternoon!"So started Manginah's eleventh annual Spring Alumni Show, which included both contemporary and old-fashioned Israeli songs, skits, spoofs and even a Hanukah-themed version of Outkast's "Hey Ya." The co-ed Jewish a cappella troop is preparing to record a new CD to be released this fall.The first musical number, "Al Haritzpah," or "On the Floor," featured Yuval Brokman '08, sunglasses on and collar upturned, as the soloist.


From Beethoven to Haydn, Lydian String recital a diverse evening

Last Saturday, the Slosberg Recital Hall played host to the Lydian String Quartet, a critically-acclaimed group of Brandeis music faculty formed in 1980, who performed a show featuring the music of Franz Joseph Haydn, Vincent Persichetti and Ludwig van Beethoven in an array of classical and avant-garde pieces.The quartet, featuring Daniel Stepner and Judith Eissenberg on violin, Mary Ruth Ray on viola and Joshua Gordon on cello, is in its fourth year of a five-year study of Viennese quartets, as well as into the works of numerous other composers.

What the #$*! Do We Know!?, a film by directors William Arntz, Betsy Chasse and Mark Vicente, seeks to probe the depths of our existence: what do we actually know and how do we know it?
