Major League Baseball Brief: Cardinals, Giants, Tigers and Yankees victorious

* Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig must be smiling from his office in New York City after the last week of October baseball. * Eight teams played in in the divisional series round of the playoffs last week, ultimately providing fans with one of the more memorable weeks of play in baseball history. * Each of the four series progressed to a decisive fifth game, and with the addition of two wild card play-in games, there were six win-or-go-home games in seven days. * First, the San Francisco Giants shocked the baseball world by winning three straight games at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati to topple the Reds.


Brief: Selig and Krems ace Invitational

Seeded 11th in the doubles "A" flight at the Wallach Invitational at Bates College this weekend, men's tennis players Alec Siegel '15 and Mitch Krems '16 had a tall first-round task in front of them in the form of Trinity College duo Jugal Marfatia and Jordan Kemp. Not only did they win thatmatchup, they advanced through three more rounds to the finals before losing to Bates' Pierre Planche and Matt Bettles. "Alec and Mitch had a great weekend," said men's tennis coach Ben Lamanna. "They're young guys, but showed good composure, they returned well, and they hit well.


Shooting for Success

Hollywood is making a pit stop in Waltham. Jewish Life Television, a 24-hour network based in Los Angeles that nationally broadcasts Jewish programming, partnered with Brandeis Athletics on June 19 to provide coverage of the Judges to its nationwide audience. The network plans to utilize a unique news ticker similar to ESPN's display, providing results from the Judges' games and matches throughout its daily programming.


Brief: Brandeis Athletics partners with JLTV for future

Brandeis Athletics is finally receiving ESPN-like treatment. The Judges are officially partnering with the Jewish Life Television Network for this upcoming year to promote coverage of the University's sports. In a desire to launch a more diverse sports programming lineup, JLTV is offering live statistics, highlights and video footage of Brandeis sporting events.


Brief: Women lead the pack in their season opening meet

The women's cross-country team, ranked No. 10 in the New England region, bolted to a strong start in its first meet of the 2012 season, notching a 34-25 win against the University of Southern Maine last Friday at Weston High School. The Judges boasted seven of the top 10 finishers in the race, edging out the Huskies by nine points.


Summer Awards Recap: Judges succeed in their award season

While school was out for the summer, the Brandeis Athletics Department remained busy by giving an array of awards to its athletes for their accomplishments last season. Carley Cooke '15 headlined the Judges' award season with her distinction as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III All-American. She was selected as the first women's tennis All-American in Brandeis' history due to her 16-6 overall record, 15-4 record in dual matches and exceptional performance in the No.
