The twelve outdoor tennis courts behind the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center have a new name and a new look. The new Cordish Tennis Center was funded as the result of an alumni game played by Jonathan Cordish ’90, who was nationally ranked throughout the course of his Brandeis tennis career and helped the Judges advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships in 1989. During his alumni match two years ago, a fast serve to Cordish hit a crack in the court and careened wildly the wrong way, causing Cordish to mishit his return. He commented that this bad bounce was going to cost him a lot of money — and it did.

So far this season, the men's and women's cross country teams have had three meets. At each of those meets, the men placed first, seventh and second, respectively, and the women placed second, 13th and third.

As the leaves begin to turn brown in beautiful New England and the brisk autumn “sweater- weather” starts to roll in, baseball enthusiasts can savor the beginning of the annual playoffs of our national pastime. This year, four mighty teams reached the milestone of more than 100 wins, suggesting the playoffs will showcase a lot of great ball clubs.

The Brandeis equestrian club team is a group of students who love horses and competing. They compete in Region Four, Zone One, of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association along with 11 other Boston-area colleges. IHSA riders compete in Hunter Seat Equitation on the flat and Hunter Seat Equitation over fences. The ISHA organization now encompasses 40 Regions in eight Zones with over 400 member colleges in 45 states and Canada, representing 10,000 members.

This past weekend, the Brandeis volleyball team hosted the first of three University Athletic Association Round Robin matches. The schools in the Round Robin were the #2 ranked Emory University Eagles, the #12 ranked Carnegie Mellon Tartans and the unranked University of Rochester Yellowjackets.

The Brandeis team is growing and getting more successful every season. Many aspects of popular culture have contributed to the increase in the popularity of the sport, including movie hits such as “Robin Hood,” “The Archer,” Tomb Raider,” “Wonder Woman,” “The Avengers,” “The Hunger Games,” “Kubo and the Two Strings” and Disney’s “Brave.” The Brandeis Archery Club team has continued to increase its membership yearly.

With a 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.9 out of ten on IMDB, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” swung into theaters on July 2. This is the fifth movie starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man since Disney struck up a deal to allow the Sony-owned character to become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this deal, Marvel Studios gained the rights to put Spider-Man in the “Avengers” franchise, if “Marvel won’t receive a cut of the box office for any of Sony’s films that feature Spider-Man. Sony won’t receive a percentage of the revenue Disney makes from Marvel’s films that have Spider-Man, either,” explained a 2015 Variety article.

With each new National Football League season, optimism is the rule for fans of all teams. Even for the fans of the teams that had poor seasons in 2018, there is the belief and hope that a star player acquired in the draft — or through trade or free agency — will be the final addition that is needed for a championship team. This past weekend, the Brandeis volleyball team suffered three lossess at the Connecticut College/U.S. Coast Guard Invitational held in New London, CT. Though the Judges fought hard and did not give way any easy points to their opponents, they just were not able to ultimately pull off a win.

The Brandeis women’s soccer team won two games this week, coming back from their loss to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. On Sept. 4, in their home opener, Brandeis shutout Bridgewater State University by a score of 3–0. This brought the Judges’ season record to 1–1. They have yet to play any games against their University Athletic Association rivals.

The Brandeis men’s soccer team won two exciting and close games this past week. On Sept. 4, Brandeis played the Clark University Cougars at Granger Field in Worcester, MA and won by a score of 2–1. This brought the Judges to a season score of 2–1.

During the 2019 preseason, the Brandeis women's soccer team remained on their home campus. They participated in many local team bonding activities, such as Coach Denise Dallamora’s barbeques and movie nights. This year’s captains are seniors Katie Hayes, Amanda Fernbach, Sierra Dana and Kerin Miller.

The Brandeis men’s tennis team has played six games since the beginning of April. Starting on April 6, the Judges have since played Bowdoin University, New York University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Case Western Reserve University, Chicago University and Emory University.

Watching the National Football League Draft on television has become a very popular activity. The 2019 NFL Draft occurred back in April and was broadcast by five different networks: ABC, ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN Deportes and the NFL Network. An average of 6.1 million people watched the draft during its three days, as reported in a 2019 Hollywood Reporter article.

The Brandeis baseball team has participated in three games this month, against Bridgewater State, Eastern Connecticut State University and University of Massachusetts Boston respectively. So far this season, the team played 37 games overall, with 16 in the conference. They had 1197 at bats, 247 runs and 339 hits.

This year the team had a strong season, ending a game just one point from being able to attend nationals. They have definitely continued to grow stronger as a team. At the beginning of next season, the team will sit down and discuss their goals for the next season.

When thinking about Quidditch, many people think about Harry Potter. Originally based loosely off of the book and movie series, this game has become an intense sport on many college campuses. This past weekend, the Brandeis Quidditch team brought 15 players to attend the national US Quidditch Cup 12 in Texas.

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Tiger Woods has returned to golfing preeminence by winning the 2019 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, as reported in an April 2019 CBS Sports article. Although this is the fifth Masters championship in Woods’s career, it is his first since 2005. Although Woods has won 15 major tournaments in his career, this is his first major tournament victory since just over ten years ago in 2008.
