University implements new sustainability initiatives

Since the start of the semester, the University has been sharing initiatives it is taking to improve sustainability efforts at Brandeis. According to the Brandeis Sustainability website, the office’s goals are to fulfill the University’s commitment to social justice, reduce its carbon footprint and be responsible members of the global community.



Judges win one of three total games this past week

The Brandeis women’s volleyball team has had a shaky start to their season. After beginning their season in a winning match against Westfield State University, the team went on a six-match losing streak. Finally broken by a win against Worcester State University, the team won that single game before losing three more games, two of them to University Athletic Association opponents Emory University and Carnegie Mellon University. The team then conquered the University of Rochester, another UAA opponent and then lost to Roger Williams University.


Women’s soccer splits October games

The Brandeis women’s soccer team kicked off the month of October with a split. The Judges defeated the Lesley University Lynx last Wednesday, but suffered a loss against the Carnegie Mellon Tartans on Saturday in their first University Athletic Association conference game. Continuing to compete against their UAA competitors, the Judges will next face Case Western Reserve University on Saturday. That game will be played at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.


Study finds sexual harassment to be a prominent issue in the medical field

Sexual harassment can create an uncomfortable work environment in any profession, and the medical field is no exception. With the number of women enrolled in United States medical schools exceeding the number of men enrolled for the first time in 2017 and then again in 2018, according to the American Association of Medical Colleges, research is being conducted to learn more about how women are treated in the medical profession.



Judges attend second meet of the season

The Brandeis Cross Country team faced off against other universities at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 21. Present at the meet were schools Suffolk College, Assumption College, Bridgewater State University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Regis College, among others. This was the Judges’ second meet of the season for both the men and women. Last we saw the teams, they recognized the shoes they had to fill with the graduation of Emily Bryson ’19 and Julia Bryson ’19. Here, the Judges continued to step up to the plate and push to be the best they can be.


University professor testifies in Johnson & Johnson opioid lawsuit

In a ruling that found Johnson & Johnson guilty of fueling the opioid crisis in the state of Oklahoma, a state judge cited University Prof. Andrew Kolodny (Heller). Kolodny's work at the University on addiction made him the prosecution’s star witness, The Courthouse News Service reports. As a result of this seven-week civil trial, Johnson & Johnson is now forced to pay the state of Oklahoma $572 million, per an Aug. 26 article in STAT News.


Mayor, city council candidates answer questions about land management policies ahead of upcoming fall election

Candidates for Waltham Mayor and the City Council answered questions about city land management issues, coinciding with the approach of preliminary elections for city government, on Sept. 15. The preliminary elections, which will be held Tuesday, are for mayor, School Committee and City Council. 


After losing to the MIT Engineers, the Judges have defeated all of their recent opponents

After the Judges lost to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers, the team has risen and conquered all of the teams that they have faced since. This week, the team played against two more teams that now leave the Judges in a four-game winning streak heading into their Tuesday matchup with the Tufts University Jumbos — Clark University and Babson College. Following their victories against the Cougars and Beavers, the team has an overall season record of 4–1. As the Judges continue to build momentum, they look ahead at the chance at the NCAA tournament later in the season. 






Judges succeed in their first match followed by two losses

The Brandeis women’s volleyball team began their season in matches on Friday against three non-University Athletic Association teams. This season brings the fresh talent of three rookies who have the potential to contribute to the success of the program, though they are currently off to a mixed start of one win and two losses. Heading into their next matchup against DeSales University on Friday, the team’s goal is to break their new two-game losing streak. 


HR employee sues Brandeis University for $2 million in racial, gender discrimination suit

A University employee is suing Brandeis University, University President Ron Liebowitz, Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration Stewart Uretsky and Interim Vice President for Human Resources Larry Lewellen. Robin Nelson-Bailey, formerly the vice president of Human Resources and Title IX coordinator, is seeking a minimum of $2 million for damages arising from alleged racial and gender discrimination throughout her employment at the University.
