Judges take third at NEIFC Championships

On Saturday, Feb. 22, the Brandeis Judges participated in the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference tournament held at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. The NEIFC is a league focused on supporting and developing intercollegiate fencing programs in and around New England. NEIFC hosts two tournaments each season. The first is the Fall Invitational usually held the first Saturday in November, and the Championship is usually held in late February.



Union Judiciary rules against Student Union President after hearing

After a contentious hearing last Tuesday night, the Union Judiciary ruled against Student Union President Simran Tatuskar ’21, finding that she failed to communicate effectively across Union branches and unconstitutionally sidestepped the vice president and executive senator in deciding the role of the executive senator, according to the Judiciary’s formal opinion, which was released on Friday.

At its weekly meeting Monday, the Student Union Senate discussed committee chair reports, and Class of 2020 Senator Scott Halper introduced a resolution prepared by the Rules Committee detailing a course of action in response to the recent Judiciary case against Union President Simran Tatuskar ’21. Executive Senator Jake Rong ’21 presided over Sunday’s meeting because Union Vice President Guillermo Caballero ’20 was not on campus. 



Brandeis hosts first Ollies Awards show

Five students, two clubs and one faculty member were recognized for their campus contributions at the first-ever Ollies Awards show on May 1, emceed by former Student Union Vice President Benedikt Reynolds ’19. The Ollies Awards Selection Committee awarded individuals and groups on campus who “are the backbone of campus life and growth,” according to the event program. 


Students recognized for their achievements at annual Prize and Awards Ceremony

Faculty, staff and students convened in the Shapiro Campus Center Theater on May 3 for the annual Prizes and Awards Ceremony, sponsored by the Dean of Students OfficeLife. The ceremony highlighted the University’s core values — citizenship, leadership and academic excellence — according to Assistant Dean of Students Stephanie Grimes, who served as master of ceremony. 






Union to launch student life website in fall 2019

Presence, an online platform that consolidates information about student life, activities and communications, will be launched by the Student Union and the Department of Student Activities in fall 2019. Presence will involve aspects of student and campus life — other than academics — including campus clubs, the Student Union, Conference and Event Services, the Department of Community Service and the Department of Student Activities. It will facilitate communication between the students and staff. 


Student union candidates debate campus issues

At 11:59 p.m. Tuesday March 19, polls will open for the first round of spring Student Union elections. Positions up for vote will be president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, junior representative to the Board of Trustees, representative to the Brandeis Sustainability Fund and junior representative to the Alumni Board. Last night, the candidates shared their perspectives on a variety of Brandeis-related subjects at the candidate debate led by current president Hannah Brown ’19. In addition to those who attended the debate in person, over 140 people watched the live stream, hosted on the Union’s Facebook page.



Vote Simran Tatuskar ’21 for Student Union President

The 2019 Student Union presidential election has several well-qualified candidates, each of whom has a vision for creating a better Brandeis. Candidates Lizy Dabanka ’20, Oliver Price ’20 and Simran Tatuskar ’21 have similar ideas on how to improve campus life, such as working to improve the relationships between students and the University and ensuring that student needs are met. However, the candidate with the most concrete vision of how to improve the Union is Tatuskar. As such, this board endorses Simran Tatuskar for 2019-2020 Student Union president.



DCL assigns housing lottery numbers

The Department of Community Living selected individual housing lottery numbers for rising sophomores (Class of 2022) and upperclassmen (Classes of 2020 and 2021) during a closed meeting last Wednesday. In attendance were Student Union President Hannah Brown ’19, Ridgewood Quad Senator Leigh Salomon ’19 and Student Union Director of Academic Affairs Brandon Stanaway ’19, as well as representatives from both campus newspapers. Lottery numbers will be released to the student body on Wednesday.
