This week was a spooky one for most, but perhaps no one more so than for the Arizona Diamondbacks. On Wednesday, Nov. 1, the Texas Rangers defeated the Diamondbacks 5-0 to cap off a 4-1 series win, clinching the franchise’s first-ever World Series title. They made league history as well, becoming the first team in Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason history to go perfect on the road, winning all 11 games on their travels. This came despite going under .500 (with a record of 40-41) in away games this season.

Since Hideo Nomo came over to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995, there has been a steady pipeline between the Nippon Professional Baseball League, Japan’s highest level of baseball, and Major League Baseball. Almost every year since 1995, NPB players have exercised their foreign free agency rights or have been posted by their teams in Japan in order to play in the pinnacle of baseball in the MLB, and this year is no exception.

On Oct. 1, the Detroit Tigers faced off against the Cleveland Guardians in their final regular season game. But this was no ordinary game — there was a drone show, a stadium card stunt, a tribute video, a special ceremony, and fans holding posters to honor one person in particular: Miguel Cabrera. This was the last game of Cabrera’s farewell season after announcing his retirement earlier in February. Cabrera had spent the last 15 of his 21 years in the MLB with the Tigers.

On Oct. 8, 2023, Kelvin Kiptum, a 23-year-old from Kenya, became the first person to run a marathon in under 2 hours and one minute. His time of 2:00:35 at the Chicago Marathon earlier this fall makes him the fastest male marathon runner in the world, surpassing Eliud Kipchoge, who ran a 2:01:09 in Berlin last year.

On Oct. 18, the University Athletes without Borders group held its first meeting to provide a space for international student-athletes to voice their concerns, hold events, and share their cultures. Co-founders Anastasia Sia ’25 and Sancho Moroto Tobias ’24 are looking to organize events about every three weeks to gather students with these shared identities.

Things did not look good for the Las Vegas Aces, who collected their first franchise title last year, as they entered the fourth game of the 2023 Women’s National Basketball Association Finals. The New York Liberty handed the Aces their first loss in the playoffs last Tuesday, 87–73, extending the final series and keeping hopes alive in New York City. Aces’ starting point guard Chelsea Gray, named the Finals Most Valuable Player last season, left game three with an apparent foot injury; and Kiah Stokes, the Aces’ starting center, showed up to the team’s Tuesday practice in crutches according to a CBS Sports report.

Last weekend was a lively one at Brandeis. Campus was bustling all weekend as the school hosted a special rendition of homecoming, celebrating the school's 75th anniversary. With dozens of events on campus for parents, alumni, and students alike, it was perhaps the most spirited, energetic, and passionate homecoming to date. On Saturday, Oct. 14th, alumni and parents poured through the stands, tailgaters packed the beer garden, and food and ice cream trucks served delicious delicacies in the parking lot as the women’s and men’s varsity soccer teams played host to the Chicago Maroons.

After the announcement of former coach Sinead Evan’s decision to step down in June 2023, a coach who headed the track and field team for 10 straight seasons which included great successes in the NCAA Division III championships and other track and field events, the University began their search for a new coach to fill her shoes.

Over the past few years, national headlines have highlighted a critical lack of support and awareness for student-athlete mental health. In response to a push for additional resources across all NCAA sports, The Hidden Opponent, a nonprofit and advocacy group dedicated to raising awareness about student-athlete mental health, has opened up chapters on over 750 college campuses, including Brandeis.

Speeches from inductees at the Brandeis Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday night did not disappoint, ranging from pure emotion and gratitude to rousing nostalgia. Alumni, staff, and student-athletes gathered in the Faculty Club to celebrate the individual inductees and the 1999 Brandeis baseball team induction.

The National Basketball Association commenced its preseason game schedule on Oct. 5. The Boston Celtics have played three gamestwo against the Philadelphia 76ers and one against the New York Knicks. Since this is the preseason, this article will not dive deep into what causes the wins or losses in these matchups but will instead discuss some valuable takeaways for the Celtics going into the 2023-24 NBA season.

The Diamond League had its final meet of 2023 before the upcoming Olympic season, the Prefontaine Classic, in Eugene, Oregon on September 16 and 17. The Diamond League series consists of 15 annual one-day outdoor invitationals throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. In order to compete in the Diamond League series, an athlete must be invited to compete in some of the 14 meets between May and September of that year. To have the opportunity to compete in the Diamond League's final meet, athletes must score the highest number of points in previous series meets by placing first to eighth to collect points respectively. For the final meet, the top 6 to 10 scorers in each event, depending on the type of event, will then compete for the title of Diamond League Champion.

On Sept. 27, the Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA announced that they had acquired Damian Lillard, a seven-time all-star point guard, in a three-way trade. The Portland Trail Blazers, in return for Lillard’s departure, received center Deandre Ayton and forward Toumani Camara from the Phoenix Suns as well as Jrue Holiday, who they later traded to the Boston Celtics, and a couple of draft picks from the Milwaukee Bucks. The Phoenix Suns welcomed center Jusuf Nurkic, shooting guard Keon Johnson, and small forward Nassir Little from Portland and landed shooting guard Grayson Allen from Milwaukee.

The International Basketball Federation, or FIBA, held their 2023 World Cup, a two week global basketball thriller, from Aug. 25 to Sept. 10. This year’s World Cup was hosted by three Asian countries — Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines — and featured a total of 32 teams from all over the world. Cape Verde, Georgia, Latvia, and South Sudan all made their debut to the biggest international basketball stage and amazed the world with their talent.
