That being said, the season is more than just the games you see on the field. Players, coaches and teams undergo rigorous training and personal development to ensure they are in peak condition for the challenges ahead.

Lacrosse, a sport founded by the Haudenosaunee Native American tribe in 1100, has now become a global sport with a historic 29 countries participating in the World Lacrosse Women’s Championship in 2022. The sport has gained popularity both worldwide, with lacrosse returning to the Olympics in 2028, and nationally in the United States, with the Sixes discipline (a faster-paced version with fewer players in a 6 v 6) and box lacrosse being included in the U.S. national teams. While the senior women’s national team and Athletes Unlimited professional league do garner a dedicated following whenever they play, National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I lacrosse has stayed at the forefront of the sport for those watching.

Travis Kelce, born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, began his career in the National Football League after being selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft as the 63rd overall pick. Paying tribute to his brother born in 1987, Kelce adorned the number 87 jersey.

On Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, the Brandeis University Track and Field team showcased their talents in the 2024 Reggie Poyau Memorial Title by seizing a well-earned victory. In their first and only home meet of the season, the women finished with 129.5 points, with 28 more points than second-place, Bates College, causing the Judges to take home the title. The men finished with 80 points, placing third, behind the notable track and field teams from Bates College, with 206 points, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) University, with 174 points.

In the first game of the UAA Challenge on Friday, Dec. 1, Brandeis Men’s Basketball claimed a 68-58 victory over Bates College. Right from the tip-off, the Judges asserted dominance, surging ahead with an impressive seven-point streak, fortifying their lead and dictating the game's pace. Bates attempted to narrow the gap with consecutive three pointers, but Brandeis, guided by Coach Jean Bain, responded swiftly, extending their advantage with a seven point surge of their own.

When the National Women's Soccer League declared it would be expanding, it didn't take long for an all woman led ownership group to take action. In an exciting development for soccer enthusiasts in Boston, it was the Boston Unity Soccer Partners who were awarded the expansion team. This franchise, set to kick off in 2026, aims to bring back professional women's soccer to the city after the dissolution of the Boston Breakers in 2018.

Brandeis men’s tennis received national recognition this week when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association included four of their players in their fall rankings on Nov. 15. The team itself was ranked as #21 in Division III.

The “rookie” — a term used to describe a professional in their first year — can be accurately applied to many young athletes coming out of college hoping to have a long career. For the Houston Texans rookie quarterback, CJ Stroud, a more appropriate term would be “MVP” with how he has been lighting up the NFL in the early start of his career.

The University Athletic Association (UAA) honored eight Brandeis student athletes across the three eligible fall sports for their outstanding achievements – five from men’s soccer, two from women’s soccer, and one from volleyball.

On Friday, Nov. 10, Brandeis Women’s Basketball kicked off the Pancreatic Cancer Awareness tournament with a decisive 61-38 victory over Wellesley College. Brandeis hosted Oberlin College, Kean University, and Wellesley College in a four-game invitational tournament. The excitement in the air from players was accompanied by tabling from several student-athlete organizations.

Sam Dienstag ’24, due to his performance in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle as well as his lead leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay on the week of Oct. 23 earned him his second UAA “Athlete of the Week” honors.

On Oct. 24, the National Basketball Association released its Official Guide for the 2023-2024 season. Among the 82 officials listed, one man stands out in particular: Hwang In-Tae. This would be Hwang’s first ever season as an NBA referee. But this personal milestone is something much greater. This season would be the first time the NBA had a referee from outside of America.
