Evaluate differing narratives in Israeli-Palestinian discourse

Last week, on Wednesday, Oct. 1, J Street U Brandeis hosted its third event of the semester, “Non-Violence Amid Violent Conflict: A Conversation with Ali Abu Awwad.” Awwad is a leading nonviolent Palestinian activist and member of the Parents Circle Families Forum, an organization that brings together Israelis and Palestinians who have lost family members to the violence of the conflict.


Two Brandeis Press authors win national book awards

Anita Shapira and Elana Maryles Sztokman, two Brandeis University Press authors, have been named winners of the 2012 National Jewish Book Award by the Jewish Book Council. Shapira won the award for her work "tracing the development of the state of Israel from the origins of the Zionist movement to the present," according to a press release from BrandeisNOW. Shapira is a professor emerita at Tel Aviv University, as well as a senior fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute. She is an Israel Prize laureate in history, and she focuses primarily on various aspects of Zionism and Israeli culture, according to the Israel Democracy Institute's webite. Shapira's work on Israel: A History was published as part of the Schusterman Series in Israel Studies, according to BrandeisNow. "This was a major project of the Schusterman Center-to provide a much needed text for students and an enlightened public throughout the world," Prof.


Lupkin to take over as interim Sustainability Coordinator

Lea Lupkin, a consultant from the firm GreenerU, is serving as the interim Sustainability Coordinator for Facilities Services following the September resignation of Janna Cohen-Rosenthal '03. Cohen-Rosenthal left her position to pursue a graduate degree at the Heller School of Social Policy and Management. Lupkin already has experience with Brandeis: she covered for Cohen-Rosenthal during her maternity leave last spring and returned to Brandeis in late August in her role as a consultant for GreenerU, where she has been for three years, helping schools in the New England area develop sustainability programs. In addition to Brandeis, GreenerU clients include other New England schools such as Brown University and Babson College. According to her email, the first thing Lupkin worked on this year after returning to Brandeis was the Green Orientation Activities.


Sustainability coordinator leaves to study at Heller

This past week, Janna Cohen-Rosenthal '03 announced that she would be leaving her position as sustainability coordinator in the Department of Facilities Services to pursue a MBA in non-profit management this fall at the Heller School of Social Policy and Management. In an email to the Justice, Cohen-Rosenthal said she enjoyed being the first sustainability coordinator.


Oxfam America VP speaks on global social justice projects

Amnesty International at Brandeis University welcomed Paul O'Brien, the Vice President of Policy and Campaigns for Oxfam America, to speak on Thursday afternoon in the Levine-Ross conference room about the challenges he has dealt with in his line of social justice work. According to its website, as one of the 17 affiliates in the international confederation of Oxfam, Oxfam America is "an international relief and development organization" working to create lasting solutions to global issues, including poverty, hunger and injustice.
