Women begin fall tennis season

            The women’s tennis team completed its fall season at the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Doubles Tennis Tournament last weekend, where two pairs of doubles rattled off perfect weekends.             The meet, which lasted from Friday to Sunday, saw the pairs of Haley Cohen ’18 and Olivia Leavitt ’19 and Sophia He ’19 and Emily Eska ’16 turn in perfect weekends for the Judges.             Cohen and Leavitt defeated counterparts from Simmons College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the tournament, shutting out the Simmons opponents 8-0 and topping the opposition from MIT by an 8-2 final.             He and Eska were victorious over opponents from Amherst College and Colby College with 8-6 and 8-3 finals respectively.


TENNIS BRIEF Squad starts year at road meet

The men’s tennis team opened its Fall season last weekend at the Middlebury College Invitational with strong play in both singles and doubles action, sending three players to the tournament’s second day.


Men and women both win at home

Gordon Field proved to be a home fortress for the Judges on Tuesday night as both the men’s and women’s soccer teams defended their home turf against visiting opponents.


Men win two of first three games of year

The No. 7 men’s soccer team opened its campaign with a pair of one-goal victories before a sluggish start provided the difference in a top-10 showdown on Saturday night, beginning the year with a 2-1 record. The Judges fell to the No.


Head baseball coach chosen on Friday

Derek Carlson ’91 was announced as the new head coach of the men’s baseball team on Friday, succeeding Pete Varney and becoming the ninth baseball coach in university history.  Varney retired at the end of June following a 34-year career as head coach that included an astounding 700 career wins, 12 NCAA Tournament berths, one trip to the NCAA Division III World Series and one Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament title. Carlson joins the Judges on the heels of 13 years as the head coach of the Roger Williams University baseball team, where he earned an ECAC title and was named Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach of the Year four times, including following the 2014 season. Carlson compiled a 261-267-7 record during the course of his coaching tenure at Roger Williams but holds a 131-100 record in conference play against CCC opponents.


Police Log

Medical Emergency Apr. 27—A party in Shapiro Residence Hall requested medical assistance for a ring stuck on their finger, claiming the finger was swollen and doubled in size.  The party was treated on the scene by BEMCo staff with a signed refusal for further care. Apr.
